Thurso Players juniors

Thurso Players Junior section has around 70 Juniors, ranging from 8 to 18 years of age.

We meet every Friday evening from 6 p.m. with some breaks throughout the year during school holidays. We also take a break over Christmas when the auditorium houses preparation for our annual pantomime.

Currently our groups meet:

Age 8 – P7 > 6.00 – 7.30 pm
S1 – S6 > 7.30 – 9.00pm

Our Juniors benefit from the wealth of experience of our volunteer adult members and occasional visiting professionals, such as the Scottish Community Drama Association (SCDA) National Drama Advisor, Carole Williams. Each week workshops take the children through theatre craft sessions such as characterisation, script writing, backstage skills, acting skills and production values.

Groups are split to allow members to enjoy their evenings with children of their own age, in safe, secure surroundings. We are a fully inclusive society and have stringent child and vulnerable adult protection policies to ensure the safety of all members.

Our adult volunteers are experienced members of Thurso Players, many of whom were Juniors themselves. With a wide variety of skills, our Friday night volunteers ensure that the Juniors have a rounded curriculum that allows them to grow in confidence as they learn within a fun environment.

Many of our Juniors over the years have gone on to become professional actors and backstage crew.

Whoops!

Every year in July a number of Juniors take part in a 2-week workshop we call Whoops!

Around 30 Juniors, guided by our volunteers, work towards a performance that takes place over two evenings at the end of the 2 weeks.

Over the course of Whoops! we meet Monday – Friday from 9.30 a.m. – 4 p.m. The children, in assigned small groups, devise their own show comprised of short sketches, and are in control of everything from concept and scriptwriting to performance, costume and props.

Whoops! is the highlight of the Junior calendar, allowing the children to put into practice all the skills they have learned throughout the year. Places are always filled quickly and the resulting show is enthusiastically attended by parents, friends and the wider Caithness community.

We have a waiting list for our Junior Section. Please contact our Junior Coordinator or Membership Secretary to be advised on waiting times and to add your child’s name to the list.
